Nuclear Families

This week was eye opening to say the least! We studied and discussed the subjects of both strong and delicate families. We learned of the differences in the ways that families function and work, and live. I loved how truly powerful a united and loving family can be.

We discussed how the family as the basic building block of society is much like this molecule, with the parents as the nucleus and the children in the orbiting rings. This is a lucid figure that explains how if our family is organized in a similar structure we can be stable and balance in every aspect.

This point is further illustrated as we remember that if one building block of society is strong, this will in turn affect for good the other units or molecules that need an example and a support. This idea is seen very clearly as we realize that there are fewer and fewer healthy family structures nowadays. We need healthy families raising future generations and this stable molecule can have a truly "Nuclear" effect as its principles are understood and applied.

We examined a study this week that told and explained opservations of Mexican Immigrant families. It was truly amazing and saddening to see how much this molecule, or "Stable Family Condition" that Mexican families had in their native country was often destroyed or lost as the family immigrated to the United States. This losing of their "Stable Family Condition" was often due to the sheer amount of time that the family was separated one from another. Often the father was the first of the family to move to the United States, resulting the the loss of a family figure in the family. This head figure was often assumed by the mother or the oldest son, or a combination of the two. This was problem causing especially when the family was reunited due to the fact the family was simply not accustomed to having the father play his role. This led to issue of leadership and respect or harsh feelings. Another problems is that both the parents often had to work because one simply did not receive sufficient wages often due to language barriers. This became problematic because often the nucleus of the family, or parents were not at home to be with and support the rest of the molecule system, resulting in unstableness. There was sadness in these families not due to a lack of love, but simply due to the fact that the sacrifices that had been made out of love were simply not producing the results that they had hoped and dreamed of. The immigrated families felt that they were had gained opportunity but in part had lost their families. This was truly heartbreaking for them. This is where the complications really came from.

I realize this anecdote or analogy may be a little strange but is really a great way to see our family. If the family is not happy and united, there may be multiple factors affecting the stable molecule. Just like in science, when a molecule is not complete, there comes a great change in its reaction with other molecules, it can become charged positively or negatively. Family Relations truly is a science.

The good news is that each one of us can do our parts to ensure that our molecule or family is running at optimum performance and making a nuclear impact on society. This was shown in some studies that had to do with impoverished families were quite interesting when observed that the family simply did not function as it should. This directly influenced the socioeconomic situation of the family and its integrants, showing the importance of being able to manage our families is absolutely crucial to managing our own lives. Especially seeing that our lives are effected every single day by our family and their decisions. They are after all, our support group; and if we can have a good support group we can conquer ourselves, and in turn the world.
